KDrama Review: "Oh My Ghostess"

I'm so excited for my first Kdrama review! This isn't the first Kdrama I've watched (I'm one of those people who got sucked in by "Boys Over Flowers"), but it'll be the first one I review on my blog. This has been in the works for a while; there isn't really any order or rhyme to these - I'm just going to review whatever I watch regardless of when it has been released. I hope these are somewhat helpful and I'd love to hear your opinion. So, let's get started! The first Kdrama is:

"Oh My Ghostess"!

HEADS UP! THERE ARE SPOILERS AHEAD.

Rating: 9.5 / 10

Why you should watch it:

The plot sounded ridiculous when I first read it, but it peaked my curiosity because of how...different it was in relation to what was being released at the time. The ghost of a girl who possessed women to fulfill her virginity grudge? It's so strange but interesting concept. What I love about this show is that it starts out silly and surface level, but then the plot evolves and becomes darker and pulls at your heart strings.

While the supporting characters are endearing and provide comical relief to the show's darker elements, the main characters - Na Bong Sun (Park Bo Young), Kang Sun Woo (Cho Jung Seok), and Shin Soon Ae (Kim Seulgi) - are a dynamic trio that complement each other with their poignant personalities.

Also, the villain found in Choi Sung Jae (Lim Ju Hwan) made me want to claw my eyes out, which is exactly what a villain should do. His storyline was articulated so well and how it intertwined with the other characters' lives it really threw you off at the beginning but made you reflect on the past and how it all connected.

For me, the show had the overall package - it made me want to cry, laugh, and the romance made me want to giggle and to kick my feet in the air. It's a breath of fresh air when a show puts utmost importance in portraying how the characters develop with the situations that they are thrown into throughout the show.

What I didn't like about it:

Some of the characters were, for lack of a better word, annoying. For instance, Lee So Hyeong (Park Jung Ah) was meant to be Kang Sun Woo's eternal crush-that-never-was, but her sudden switch of emotion didn't really come with any fair warning except when Na Bong Sun arrived. Maybe because I'm biased and I wanted Na Bong Sun to end up with the Chef, but how she treated the rejection afterwards felt a bit unfulfilling.

Sung Jae's rebuilding scenes felt rushed and really artificial. I would've been fine with him just dying at the end. Reuniting with Kang Eun Hee (Shin Hye Sun) towards the very end, I guess, was intended to be a bit more realistic, but the dude jumped off of a 3+ story building...it's unlikely he'd be in good condition. Also, their relationship I felt was never built up where I was attached. So when it was revealed Sung Jae was the antagonist, it didn't affect my feelings about their relationship as much as it could have. I think if more of their relationship prior to the point in their lives the show is set was revealed, his transformation would've been more effective.

Would I watch it again?

YES MULTIPLE TIMES

Favorite Character:

It's difficult to just choose one when you like every character in different ways. This is such a predictable answer but Na Bong Sun's evolution was one of my favorite parts of the whole series. I enjoyed how she didn't dramatically change her looks to suit the chef's tastes, but rather (with the help of the ghost) blossomed with confidence and really exposed her true beauty. I think she's important because many girls can see themselves in her shoes. She is so precious and shall be protected at all times.

SHOUTOUT TO THE NEW CHEF AT THE END TOO HE WAS SMOKIN'

Favorite Couple/Pairing:

BONG SUN AND SUN WOO OBVIOUSLY. THEY ARE THE CUTEST AND I WILL TREASURE THEM FOREVER BECAUSE THEY ARE THE REASON THIS SHOW WAS SO AMAZING.

I also loved Shin Soon Ae and Seobinggo's relationship because they brought out the best in each other, even though it took them awhile to admit it to themselves.

Finally, to the couple that never was, I will always wonder what would've happened if Bong Sun had ended up with the supporting cutie Seo Joon.

Favorite Song from the OST:

Eyes by Jay Park

I found this really cute video of Bo Young and Sun Woo moments and it flows so well with the song. Beware - there aren't any plot spoilers but there is a whole BUNCH OF CUTENESS.

Thanks for reading! :)
